I’ve told this story (my favorite) many times – so feel free to move on if indeed I’ve already bent your ear.

Our farm was party-central for Sam! Naturally…we tried our best to find the hidden beer. An exercise in futility. But at least the boys stayed at our home.

I woke early one morning and stumbled into the kitchen only to find a butt, clad in loud plaid boxers, bent over searching the fridge for food. Out pops Sam with his usual hearty, “Morning Mr. Thomas – just looking for something to eat.” Nothing new there! After some small talk – about food of course – I asked him what time he got up. His response was classic Sam…”Haven’t been to bed yet Mr. Thomas.”

So…I decided to leave him to his search. But before leaving I told him I had a pair of boxers just like the ones he was wearing. Without missing a beat, Sam told me these were mine. He had “peed” in his pants and needed a fresh pair. Our son, Mark, told him where mine were – and Sam, being Sam – marched into our bedroom, found a pair he liked…and left. He was quick to add that he was very quiet – he didn’t want to wake us.

I stood silent for a moment – but realized this was Sam just being Sam. He was family, and treated us accordingly – families share everything. I returned to bed…chuckling all the way.

I could write a book – and may some day. I have a great deal more “Sam-stories” but this one is my favorite – and oh, so typical of Sam. Borrowing a pair of my boxers was as natural to him as raiding our fridge.

Our family thinks of him almost daily – we are thankful for the few years we shared with him.

Still calling your cell phone Sam – I like hearing your voice.

I never met Sam but I certainly know of him. I worked with his aunt, Anita Robb, and she always spoke lovingly of Sam, his parents and his two sisters. I was with Anita when Sam was first diagnosed and followed him, through Anita, through his surgeries and treatments and was amazed at his remarkable attitude. It was while he was in treatment that I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and a week later they found that I had bladder cancer and two weeks after that I had a stroke. I remembered how Sam had acted and always kept his attitude in mind – that you have to play the cards you are dealt – Sam’s words, not mine.

Sam led by example and there were countless times during my treatments that I would think – WWSD – what would Sam do? Here was a teenager motivating a guy in his sixties.

I still wear Sam’s white bracelet. He gave me the courage to “fight till the last breath”.

Sam was quite a guy. I wish I had met him. I will be forever grateful to him.
